Los Roques Archipelago.

The Best of the Caribbean

Los Roques, Venezuela’s Caribbean National Park – The Margarita Island Alternative

Imagine this…

The sun filters through the warm blue-green waters. The only sound you hear is your own breathing.  From the depths, a large barracuda glides by, and then a squirrel fish and a red snapper. You swim deeper to get a better look at the dazzling colors of the beautiful yet fragile Cabecera de Los Roques barrier reef. You are taking a fantastic voyage into one of the world’s most spectacular locations for scuba diving and snorkeling. You are experiencing one of the few eco-diving destinations in the world today.

Making This Marine Adventure A Reality

Let Angel-Eco Tours introduce you to all the natural glories that Los Roques archipelago has on offer. Los Roques are the southernmost of the Caribbean islands and arguably the most spectacular. Boasting over 50 islands surrounding a huge lagoon, Los Roques feature pristine white sand beaches and a variety of wildlife, including iguanas, salamanders and black lizards. Located 70 miles north of Caracas, and less than a one-hour flight from Margarita Island or the mainland, Los Roques archipelago is one of the largest “Sea Parks” in the Caribbean.

With our eco-alliance partners on Los Roques, Angel-Eco Tours can arrange a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Kayaking
  • Sailing
  • Snorkeling
  • Fishing – catch and release
  • Scuba diving
  • Wind and kite surfing
  • Visits to lobster farms and the turtle preservation project in Dos Mosquises

Or you can just relax on the beautiful deserted keys around Gran Roque.

Rich Marine Life

The rich variety of the marine species in the archipelago would impress any scuba diver. Los Roques’ coral reefs are exceptionally varied environments where fluctuations in temperature, small areas of rough and calm waters, and bright and shady areas where an abundance of nutrients are generated.

Some species of fish, such as the surgeon fish, angel fish and the spotfin butterfly fish, have adapted especially to the coral reef. Should you choose to scuba dive at Los Roques, you would encounter a diverse array of fish, parrot fish, barracudas, nurse sharks, various species of rays and manta rays and enormous screens of plankton.

If you were to dive in the crystal blue waters on a undersea scuba diving adventure or even with snorkel, you would also see a complex underwater ecosystem of sea grasses. This ecosystem is the home of hundred of species of fish, as well as mollusks, turtles, snails and the queen conch.

A Vacation Destination for the Birds

The islands are also a bird watcher’s paradise. Species include masked, red-footed and brown boobies, sooty terns, brown noddies, laughing gulls and brown pelicans.

Of the 92 species of birds that have been recorded in the Los Roques archipelago, 50 migrate from North America to escape the harsh winter. Because of its location, Los Roques National Sea Park is ideal as a resting and feeding ground for the birds.

Customized Scuba Diving Vacation Packages

If you want a Caribbean island vacation away from the cruise ships and crowded resorts, the Los Roques archipelago customized scuba diving vacation package from Angel-Eco Tours is for you.

Scuba diving packages are available upon request. Many travelers add this package on to another Angel-Eco Tours trip. If you don’t want to scuba dive you can enjoy the island on a boat trip, snorkel, swim, kayak, windsurf or simply relax.

Catch and Release, Fish / Relax in Paradise

“Catch and Release, in Paradise” for Individuals and / or families

One or all the family may enjoy this, after talking to many locals on the island, Angel-Eco Tours heard that many fishermen and fisherwomen used to venture there just to fish – however, nowadays there are very few that do so. Therefore, we are offering a new program for family, friends and individuals – a “Catch and Release, Fish / Relax Program”

Written by Paul Stanley the President of Angel-Eco – “on a recent trip some weeks before the pandemic struck, a friend, who is an avid fisherman, my brother, a beach “bum” and myself spent three days / two nights in paradise. We visited three small islands close to Gran Roque over the three days and my good friend convinced me to fish with him at each of the locations where we were dropped off each day.

During those few days I fished just using a simple spinner and I caught around 10-11 different species culminating in one special catch of the day, a nice sized bone fish! I was told that this particular fish is a “fisher person’s” dream. Understandably really after the fight that it put up, even better than the two Spanish mackerels, snapper and Barracuda that I had caught prior to that. I was hooked literally, I had a blast. After that last catch I stopped fishing as I felt I had done it all and enjoyed the luxurious sunshine and beautiful azure waters – of course washed down with a nice refreshing beer.”

Trip Summary
When to go

Trips run year-round. Departures can be arranged from Caracas, Charallave or Higuerote.

Price

The prices in Los Roques depend upon the type of accommodations that you are looking for and of course dependent on your budget. The lodges range from standard accommodations with comfortable air conditioned rooms (mostly) through superior to deluxe. To our knowledge only one has solar panels and we can make that as one of our recommendations.

Please ask us to prepare something that meets your pricing expectations. Also we suggest not booking all inclusive packages to give you the freedom of visiting nearby cays (islands) and choosing where you would like to eat during the evenings as there are a number of options available. Many lodges we work with have their own boat captains – so ask first before venturing elsewhere as to what’s available. A favourite full day trip is to one of the further cays and a visit to the turtle conservation project on the island of Dos Mosquises. The following dive prices were existent at the time of writing and are subject to change. Non divers can also join their friends and will be subject to a different charge.
