An original trip from Angel-Eco Tours, landing on the same airstrip that Jimmie Angel later Ruth Robertson landed on. This adventure retraces the expedition that Ruth Robertson took to Angel Falls, the icon of Venezuela, starting in Uruyén, Kamarata Valley. The trip will reminisce Ruth’s life and experiences, taken from her memoirs.
Includes spectacular scenery with ancient tepuis, overlooking the tour every day, table-top mountains billions of years old, rainforest and savannahs. Also a cultural immersion with the local Pemón of Kamarata Valley, and much more
Angel Falls – is the tallest waterfall in the world standing at 979 metres / 3,212 feet, located deep in Canaima National Park. The falls were named after an American Bush pilot – Jimmie Angel – in November 1933.
Fly from Caracas to Canaima and then take a small Cessna flight to Uruyén in Kamarata Valley located deep inside Canaima National Park. Landing on the same airstrip that Jimmie Angel landed on.
Afternoon activities include a hike into Yurwan Canyon and a visit to the spectacular waterfall there.
Ask your guide to show you where the tarantulas live – in the canyon’s wall. Quite harmless.
Return to the lodge for some relaxation
Overnight in Uruyén. (D)
Before or after breakfast enjoy a vigorous 2-3 hr hike to Kavak crossing the river Aicha to the small community of Uruyén then through savannahs and primary rainforests to Santa Marta, a community that has been untouched. The Pemón there still maintain their language, culture and traditions. Incidentally, this hike was once voted one of the best in South America by “Walking Magazine”.
In Santa Marta it is possible that the community may welcome the group with traditional cultural dancing and singing plus a chance to taste “Tuma” the food of the Pemón.
After this break continue the hike traversing another larger river and on to Kavak.
Dependant upon arrival time have lunch, relax a little before setting off to explore Kavak’s Canyon with its spectacular waterfalls, Golondrina (Swallow Falls) and Tewanarempa (Honey Bee Falls).
Overnight at Kavak Lodge. (B,L,D)
Before or after breakfast take a 2-3 hours hike up to the tepui’s first level to La Toma, rocks balanced on each other in the middle of a stream, with great vistas of the valley below. A Pemón myth says: “if these rocks ever fall the world would end.”
After La Toma continue on to Indian Cave and waterfall, where the canyon’s wall looks like the face of an Indian. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool below the falls. Return for lunch.
After lunch we set off for Kamarata, a Pemón indigenous community close by. Visit the new Cultural Centre and museum that Angel-Eco helped build through their foundations Angel Conservation (New York) and Fundacíon Etnika (Caracas).
Also we may visit the Capuchin Mission and schools depending on the school year and timing.
Overnight in Kamarata in hammocks at Karaurimba Lodge by the river. (B,L,D)
After breakfast hike to Kamarata Port take to the Akanaan River in a motorised curiara (dugout canoe) for a delightful trip, stopping for lunch and a dip alongside the rapids at Iwana Meru, then on to the secluded camp at Arenal.
The camp is situated along the banks of the Carrao River opposite Wei Tepui (Sun and Moon tepui) and the vast walls of Auyántepui, two table-top mountains reaching high into the sky.
Overnight in hammocks. (B,L,D)
River journey continues into Devil’s Canyon, to the base of Angel Falls.
